Laminar flow workstations, safety cabinets and isolators are important equipment in laboratories and cleanrooms, each offering specific protective functions.
Laminar flow workstations
Laminar flow workstations provide a controlled environment with a uniform airflow that passes either horizontally or vertically through the work area. This airflow is cleaned by HEPA filters or ULPA filters to create a contamination-free zone. They are mainly used to protect products from contamination, e.g. when working with sterile materials or in electronics manufacturing.
Safety cabinets
Safety cabinets are specially designed to protect both the user and the product. They are divided into different classes:
- Class I: Protects the user, but not the product.
- Class II: Protects both the user and the product with a vertical airflow and HEPA filter or ULPA filter.
- Class III: These workbenches are completely enclosed and have built-in gloves that allow the user to work inside the workbench without having direct contact with the materials. They offer a high level of protection against particles and aerosols that may be generated during work. Tools and materials are fed into the workbench through airlocks to prevent contamination.
Isolators
Class 3 safety cabinets and isolators are both designed to protect personnel and products in laboratory environments, but they have different applications and protection mechanisms:
Isolators offer an even higher standard of protection than Class 3 safety cabinets, particularly in terms of sterility and purity of the environment. They are completely sealed off and provide a controlled environment that is often used for the manufacture of sterile pharmaceuticals. Isolators also allow you to work in less stringent cleanroom classes as they provide a high-purity environment themselves, but are much more expensive in comparison
In summary, both systems offer a high level of protection, but isolators are often the preferred choice for applications that require extremely high purity and sterility. Class 3 safety cabinets are used for general protection against particles and aerosols in laboratories.
So once again in a nutshell:
Laminar flow workstations: Protection of the product through purified air flow.
Safety cabinets: Protection of user and product, available in various classes.
Isolators: Maximum protection thanks to fully enclosed systems, ideal for handling hazardous substances or aseptic requirements.
