What mistakes should be avoided when planning a cleanroom?

We often come across the same weak points in many of the planning documents we receive. Here are our top 5 errors that lead to discussions or costly rework after commissioning at the latest.

  1. Airlocks too small

Due to a lack of space, airlocks are often designed too small. This later leads to bottlenecks or to poor or incorrect changing procedures. It is not uncommon to subsequently look for ways to expand the airlock.

  2. Not thinking about the future

In many projects, subsequent expansion is not considered – or not in sufficient depth. Every second one of our projects is modified again within 8 years of the original construction. If the technical system and the design do not allow for this, this requirement can become expensive or even impossible.

  3. Operating costs disregarded

Air conditioning and ventilation technology is often designed in a way that has been known for a long time. Efficiency hardly plays a role here – in favor of manufacturer solutions, simple handling or supposedly low investments. The result: permanently high operating costs.

  4. Building height too low

One of the problems that many cleanroom builders have to contend with. There is a lack of height. There is hardly any space left for ducts, ceilings, FFUs or installations.

  5. Too little technical space

Depending on the technical concept with which a cleanroom is built and whether or not air conditioning needs to be installed, different amounts of space are required for air conditioning units and control cabinets. Unfortunately, this need is often underestimated and not enough space is made available, resulting in poor, cumbersome and often expensive compromises.

Of course, these are just some of the typical problems, but they are certainly the ones that occur most frequently. Sometimes for understandable reasons. But often also because there is a lack of knowledge or time was short.

As with all projects, the more thought you put into a cleanroom and the more time you take, the more resilient and better the result will be – of course, this all requires the appropriate know-how, but that’s what we’re here for 😉
