How does a material lock work?

Material locks are used to connect areas of different air standards and cleanroom classes.

Materials, equipment and documents can be transported into the cleanroom without employees having to lock themselves in and out. A material lock works because of mutually interlocked doors. Since only one door can be opened at a time, the pressure difference between the rooms is maintained. The air in the material lock is 'purged', i.e. filtered and exchanged, during material transfer. This removes airborne particles and minimises contamination.
